Tokens of a Time Gone By offers a unique perspective on the London Biennale’s theme of ‘maps, mazes and mysteries’ (2014). This multi-media exhibition by Noel Ed De Leon calls on viewers to explore how they map out personal and family stories using material objects. De Leon seeks out tokens of the past which linger in households world-wide – photographs, out-dated kitchen equipment, old recording devices, personal trinkets and family memorials, to name but a few – re-combining these items into contemporary multi-media installations. The new associations set up between objects in his installations hint at the complex, at times contradictory, relationship between family accounts and grander, national histories of creativity, migration, conflict, and religion.
On Saturday, 21st June, the artist will stage the international premier of his performance artwork ‘Tracing the Traces.’ We cordially invite you to attend this performance, which will be followed by a curator’s tour, presenting De Leon’s collection and assemblage practices in greater detail.
As a part of the closing of the London Biennale 2014, De Leon’s exhibition will be the venue for an interactive artists’ talk organized by David Medalla and Adam Nankervis. Artists from Asia, Latin America, Africa and Europe, will speak live and via skype on the subject of ‘creative travels and encounters.’
Please RSVP to Noel Ed De Leon or Eva Bentcheva whether you would like to attend the Artist’s Performance and Curator’s Tour on Saturday 21st June as there are a limited number of available places.

Abstract art is a way of expressing my ideas and emotions that dictate me and cannot be controlled by my mind. Abstract art is a process of surprise with the image and behaviour of colours that connect to the viewers.  - Noel Ed de Leon, 2011

A Definition of Life

“Life As I Know It” began to evolve soon after I started my own family. Together with my loving and understanding wife, I experienced both happiness and hardship trying to work and raise our children in this country.

I don’t have anything except from them, my family, which I called my own.

This exhibition is my way of sharing my passion of being a family man and an artist.

It has been quite a while since I started to collect antiques and vintage memorabilia (otherwise known as ‘found objects’). I found them as good pieces of art, and I take an interest in militaria history and objects. You will notice that found objects feature prominently throughout the exhibition. What material I used in general, inherits and expresses the conditions of how we have coped as a family.

I take this opportunity to show you what I feel and who I am.

I am Noel Ed De Leon. Filipino Artist and family man for a lifetime.
